The Ondo State Security Network, known as Amotekun Corps, has revealed that over the past three weeks, at least 20 commercial motorcyclists (okada riders) were robbed and killed in various incidents across the state. The corps is committed to reducing criminal activities to the minimum and has initiated 24-hour patrols to enhance safety before, during, and after the Christmas season.
Akogun Adetunji Adeleye, the state Commander of the corps and Special Adviser to Governor Rotimi Akeredolu on Security Matters, emphasized that the government’s ban on commercial motorcycles from 6 pm to 6 am remains in effect but won’t affect motorcycles on essential duties. He urged motorcyclists to take breaks after working for 12 hours to help identify criminal elements.
Adeleye also outlined additional measures for safety, such as the requirement for vehicles to have registration numbers and the need for police permits for tinted glass. He warned that vehicles with stickers instead of dealer numbers would be impounded.
Six suspects were arrested with locally-made weapons, allegedly planning to disrupt the peace in Ondo State. Adeleye conveyed a strong message that such activities during the Yuletide season would not be tolerated.
The Amotekun Corps, in collaboration with other security agencies, is implementing a 24-hour patrol operation throughout the Ember months, focusing on identified black spots, especially in Akure. They aim to reduce various criminal activities, including kidnapping and break-ins, and have called for the public’s support in their efforts.
